Can a Water Leak in a Windshield Be Repaired?

The short answer to that question is “it depends.” When you’re dealing with a water leak in your windshield, you first have to know where the leak is coming from and how extensive the damage is. Here are the steps to repairing a water leak in your windshield.

1. Find an Expert

While there are sites out there that say you can repair it yourself, we highly recommend you consult a professional windshield repair technician, otherwise you could be causing more damage. When looking for a professional windshield repair technician, be sure they’re not only experienced but they’ll also help you with your insurance claim.

2. Inspection

Whether you contact a mobile auto glass service or if you bring your vehicle into a shop, a technician will want to inspect your windshield to see where the leak is coming from. Once they do this, you will know whether the leak is safe to repair.

It’s possible the drainage system in your vehicle could be clogged or not working correctly. This can cause a backup of water that leaks onto the windshield.

However, the leak can be caused by an issue with the seal or the glass itself. While we always prefer to repair instead of replace, you have to consider ADAS technology and whether repairing the leak will interfere with your safety.

3. Get the Job Done

Once you know whether the leak is from a faulty or deteriorated seal or if it’s due to a crack the technician can get to work.

  • If the drainage system is clogged, repairing and/or unclogging it should fix the issue.
  • If the tech is going to repair the windshield, they’ll likely remove some old sealant, clean the area, and apply a new adhesive that will make the bond water-tight.
  • If the tech is going to replace your windshield, they’ll remove it with ease, take away the old adhesive, apply the sealant, and replace your windshield. If you have a newer vehicle equipped with ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems), you’ll also need a windshield calibration, which doesn’t take long.

More importantly, if your windshield leaks time is of the essence. Leaks can cause interior damage and cost you a lot more in the long run. Do yourself and your vehicle a favor and get that windshield leak repaired right away.
